Why LaTeX2Web
PDF files seem the natural output of LaTeX. However, because it refers to fixed dimensions, it renders poorly on mobile devices. So, one might ask:
How important is the usage of mobile devices for internet access? Statscounter provides interesting charts on the respective market shares of desktop vs mobile vs tablet market devices.
As of June 2024 the respective market shares of desktop vs mobile vs tablet devices worldwide are respectively 42.2 % (desktop), 55.87% (mobile) and 1.92% (tablet).
Interestingly enough, if one restricts the statistics to the USA, the figures become 66.49% (desktop), 31.78% (mobile) and 1.74% (tablet). In France and Canada, mobile and desktop have roughly the same market shares.
In India, the shares are 20.04% (desktop), 79.52% (mobile) and 0.44% (tablet).
If you live in the USA, you might well have a cognitive bias on the importance of desktop. Even there, the importance of mobile cannot be neglected, even though one might think that "everybody has a computer".
The truth is that, worldwide, mobile devices are the most common internet capable devices, and they are often the only one available. On top of all that, a mobile device is with you most of the time, which is not the case for a computer.
So, what has this to do with LaTeX?
Because PDF is mostly unreadable on mobile, sticking to PDF format as the output of LaTeX greatly restricts the ability of the content to reach people worldwide. If your content is available as a mobile friendly web page, it will reach another range of public.
On top of that, if the content is written in a language that is not understood by the reader, you can use Google Translate or similar software to translate the content.
This is especially important in education. Spreading STEM education though mobile friendly web content can have a huge impact, especially when there seems to be a defiance towards the scientific method.
LaTeX2Web gives the LaTeX author the tool for converting LaTeX documents into mobile friendly web pages.
